HORSE TALK
Halswell Pony Club
The Halswell Pony Clubs' one-day event will be held as usual at McDrury’s Farm 1 .andsdown tomorrow. There are 68 entries in the four age classes and competition should be keen. This fixture always caters for the novice and less experienced horses and ponies and is therefore well supported by Pony Club members. Ferrymead Pony Club As a number of would-be competitors have not received entry forms for the Ferrymead Pony Club's one-day event to be held at ♦he Ferrymead grounds Heathcote on May 1, entries will be accepted at the Halswell Pony Club one-day event tomorrow. This event is open to all riders under 21 years. The Novice No. 9 Dressage Test will be used.
iurinak Course
Mr Carl Jurinak the official jumping and dressage instructor for New South Wales will be taking two courses in Christchurch from May 2 to May 8. The morning course will be for dressage and the afternoon course for combined training, dressage and jumping. Mr Jurinak will also give a lunchtime lecture everyday on showjumping. Both courses are for riders over 17 years and all riders interested should contact Mrs D. Crowther. It is most important that these courses be filled to ensure that South Island riders will be able to receive the benefit from such highly qualified instructors again in the future. Riders wishing to take both courses may do so at a reduced rate. Mr Carl Jurinak, a Hungarian by birth was trained at the Hungarian Cavalry school. He is a gifted instructor
and was the official trainer of the Australian Olympic show-jumping team at Tokyo. His previous course at Christchurch last November was very much enjoyed and appreciated by all who attended. New Zealand is fortunate in being able to obtain two instructors of the standard of Mr Jurinak and Mr Mairenger both of whom are official trainers and instructors to the Equestrian Federation of Australia.
The Horse Society’s Easter show held at Leeston on Easter Saturday was enjoyed by all who attended, not withstanding the unsettled ■weather. The feature event, the Beath Cup and Canterbury Show jumping Championship was won by Miss M. Ross and Limelight. It was very pleasing to see this good horse back at his best after his recent off-form spell.
The Kildare Cup for the Take-your-own line event was won by Wanderer, ridden by Miss J. Thomas and the sub area teams’ event was once again won by the Central area team, which quite obviously enjoyed this event. In fact, the competitors seemed to have a much better appreciation and understanding of the rules for this event than some of the judges. The Champion Hack at this show was Mrs R. R. Bain’s Harvest Moon a very nice small animal who at other shows often gets lost among his bigger rivals. The Champion Hunter was Blue w Smoke owned and ridden by Mrs E. G. Rutherford. Blue Smoke is a big horse who can really gallop on and a horse who possesses quite a magnificence of his own. The champion pony was Miss A. Morkanes Cherry Ripe who was also the winner of the under 14.2 class.
