Ram Evaluation

The Banks Peninsula Veterinary Club has begun a programme of fertility evaluation which it is hoped will differentiate between a good ram and a “passenger” in the flock.

Dr. G. K. Cordell, of the Banks Peninsula Veterinary Club, told fanners attending a field day at French Farm last week that it was an attempt to improve lambing percentages on the peninsula. He said' it was found that many properties were carrying the so-called “passengers." "The

use of this new method of evaluation is something that we would like to see most farmers take advantage of,” he said. The method involves electric ejaculation of the ram and a complete evaluation of the semen, 'nils is done within about two months of tupping. Dr. Cordell said it was preferred not to do the rams at the two-tooth stage but rather in the following year. If a ram performed poorly under the test he said that the process was repeated in a week or two weeks as a check.
