RACING Grand Coeur Likely In Marlborough Cup

(I'rom Our Own Reporter)

BLENHEIM.

Birthright was scratched yesterday for today’s Marlborough Gold Gup. What began as a small lump on the tendon of his near fore-leg on Thursday had developed into a sizeable swelling by yesterday morning.

If the swelling subsides at the week-end and he can be taken to the beach for salt water treatment, Mr G. H. Murdoch’s good stayer will probably run on the third day of the meeting.

B. J. Anderton, who was to have ridden Birthright, might inow ride El Ganador. As he will probably have to ride a few pounds above the horse’s weight of 7-10, a final decision is unlikely to be made until E. Temperton arrives from the North Island this moaning. J. L. Barr, part-owner and trainer of General Gilbert, has till 8.30 this morning to make a decision about a start for the Marlborough Cup topweight. C. A. Bowry has decided to run Te Aro only in the cup. As General Gilbert has obviously thrived since his Wattle Gold Cup win and looked a picture of fitness when given light exercise yesterday morning it is unlikely that he will pass up the chance of another rich prize. He is almost certain to be a firm favourite for the first leg of the T.A.B. double. On Wattie Gold Cup running his strongest rivals should be Golden Vanity, Lorastan, So Lovely and El Ganador, but if the latter’s stablemate, Grand Coeur, comes up with one of his best runs at his first start at the meeting he might be the hardest to beat. With Te Aro dropped out of the Stewards’ Handicap field the second leg fancy still seems hard to predict. It seems likely that Kintyre will again have the distinction but there will be solid backing also for Carester. Royal Admiral, Sabell and Vivien Robe. The Awapuni stablemates, Dine and Dance and Sabaean Summer, might succeed in the on-course double which will be run on the Mayfield Hack Hurdles and the Apprentices’ Improvers’ Handicap. Although a change is predicted the weather in Blenheim seems very settled. The track is in excellent order.
