compiling maps, until his death in 1931. But the German colonial empire he helped to establish Was short-lived, being mostly over-run by Allied forces in the early stages of the First World War. South-West Africa was occupied by South African troops, and after the war was mandated to South Africa. After the Second World War, the South African Government wished to annexe South-West Africa, but the United Nations insisted on a continuation of trusteeship status.
During 1965 the future of the territory- was the subject of a protracted hearing before the International Court of Justice at The Hague. The court’s verdict is not expected to be announced before next June.
