Lawyers Approve Of New Procedure

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 22. “The legal profession welcomes and supported the decision of the judges that, in 1 future, the customary practice will be that 1 the accused person will not be in the dock ’ during the actual course of the trial,” the ’ president of the New Zealand Law Society, ’ (Mr E. D. Blundell), said today.

“While we do not believe that the practice in the past has caused indignity to the accused or militated against his having a fair trial, there has been increasing support for the view that his complete isolation in the dock offends against the fundamental principle that throughout the entire trial and until the verdict is given, he is presumed to be innocent.

“At the same time, it should be recognised that the dignity of the Court and of the hearing of the trial must always be maintained. “For that reason there may be occasions when it is advis-

able to revert to the previous practice. “That, however, can safely be left to the decision of the presiding Judge."
