Army’s Obstacles

(N Z. Press Association!

AUCKLAND, April 22.

In spite of considerable publicity, the need for young men to enter the Army on a period of military service had not been recognised, the Director of Army Recruiting (Lieutenant-Colonel H. L. Jones) said in Auckland today.

The basic problems, he said, were the lack of public awareness of the extent of the New Zealand commitments which

created a need for a steady stream of recruits, and the acceptance of this by young men of military age, as well as -full employment throughout New Zealand.

An Army officer in Auckland said today that no applications for enlistment in the Ist Battalion. and service in Malaysia had been received in the week since the Northern Military District opened a campaign to enlist 135 of the 300 infantrymen required.
