Prices Variable At Dunedin Wool Sale

DUNEDIN, April 22

Prices for the medium and strong crossbreds which made up most of the offerings eased significantly during the seventh Dunedin wool sale today. Merino and halfbred wools were fully 2£ per cent dearer than at Timaru.

Fine to extra fine crossbreds were slightly dearer and medium to coarse crossbreds slightly cheaper than at Wellington. Prices for lambs’ wool were firm but there was some irregularity in the demand for second shear. Most of the wool was bought by European firms with some competition from Bradford. Local mills bid for the few suitable lines.

There were some passings and the Wool Commission bid on some lines. Much of the crossbred wool, which made up the bulk of

the 24,339 bales offered, was of weak staple. The limited range of fine fleece wools were mostly end of season lots. There was a fair amount of lambs’ fleece wool and although this was handicapped by shortness of staple prices remained firm. Pieces and bellies were water-stained as a result of February’s weather.
