CLAY SHOWS HIS HAND

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright? MIAMI BEACH. Cassius Clay, learning a lesson from his last two successful heavy-weight title defences, worked out bare-fisted on the heavy punching bag yesterday until his hands were raw and bleeding, United Press International reported. “It felt good,” said Clay, who is training for a title fight in London on May 21 against Henry Cooper, of Britain. “I haven’t hit the heavy bag since the second Liston fight, and that’s what’s been wrong with me. “I fought them last two guys with tender hands.” Clay said he did not work out on the heavy bag prior to his recent bouts with Floyd Patterson in Las Vegas and George Chuvalo in Toronto.

“And in each fight I got sore hands."

“That’s why I couldn’t knock them out,” he said. “The big bag develops power. Now I’ll put in a lot of time on that thing.” After his work-out, his manager put some medicine on Clay’s battered hands and was told by the champion: “That stuff stings.” “Yeah,” replied his manager, Mr A. Dundee, “but Cooper’s left hook stings worse.”
