Hems To Be Kept Down
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.)
LONDON, April 22.
“Keep your knees covered” is the latest order being given to stewardesses of British United Airways. The airline has warned 500 girls: “The superintendent will check hostesses whose skirt hemlines are following the dictates of current fashion trends.” The stewardesses who have been turning over their waistband to shorten their skirts —have asked their union to protest at She airline’s “frumpish attitude” at a time when fashion demands that skirts should be at least four inches above the knee.
Hilary Whiteside, a B.U.A. stewardess, said the airline would find it hard to make the regulation stick. “We will simply shorten our skirts, and when we see the chief hostesses, we will tug them down again.”
