Six Debutantes Presented
Large bowls of richly coloured autumn blooms, mixed with autumn leaves and flax, decorated the Winter Garden last evening when six former pupils of Christchurch Girls’ High School were presented to the president of the Association (Mrs W. A. Staff) at the annual debutante ball. Shields in the school colours were featured in the official alcove, and a large replica of the association’s motto hung from the band rostrum. The ballroom was decorated with clusters of brightly coloured balloons.
The debutantes were presented to Mrs Staff by the school’s headmistress (Miss P. M. Robinson). After mak-
ing her curtsey each debutante received a posy of flowers.
The debutantes were: Misses Carolyn Brown, Janet Crampton, Denise Layboume, Denise Meadows, Helen Melhopt and Jan Wilkinson. Specially invited guests included Miss P. M. Robinson, Miss E. Cornyns Thomas, President of Parent-Teacher Association (Mr I. Miller) and Mrs Miller: Miss B. Waller, representing the staff of the school; representatives of kindred associations; St Margaret’s College Old Girls’ Association, Rangi-ruru Old Girls’ Association, Avonside Girls.’ High School old Girls’ Association, Christchurch
I West High School Past Pupils’ (Association and Christchurch i Boys’ High School Old Boys’ Association. Mrs Staff wore a slender gown of royal blue and silver lurex brocade. The fitting bodice featured a wide, scooped neckline and tiny sleeves. * Miss Robinson chose a gown of peacock coloured silk with slim skirt and a floating back panel.
