Kelliher Contest Paintings To Be Shown In Britain
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, April 22.
Twenty to 30 paintings from the Kelliher art competition this year will be exhibited in Britain. Entries for the 1966 competition will close on May 6. Prize winners are expected to be announced and the exhibition opened in the gallery of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington, on June 27. Twenty paintings from the competition last year have been displayed in New Zealand House in London and in the Guildhall.
When the paintings from the competition this year arrive in Britain the two groups will be combined and sent on a tour of Britain. Already several galleries have been booked. The founder of the Kelliher Art Trust (Sir Henry Kelliher) said today that the overseas invitation to exhibit original New Zealand paintings presented a challenge to artists to depict the New Zealand scene and way of life.
He said the opportunity should be taken not only to portray the unrivalled scenery, but to show New Zealanders enjoying and taking part in recreational, agricultural, pastoral and industrial activities.
