Thant’s Chance

The United States and the Soviet Union have told U Thant they 7 support him for a second term as United Nations Secretary - General, according to the Associated Press. With such big-power support, he was generally believed certain of re-election if he should agree to continue after his first fiveyear term expires on November 3. V Thant, who is Burmese, has promised to let United Nations members know in June whether he will do so. The Secretary-General is chosen by the General Assembly on recommendation of the Security Council. The assembly convenes again on September 20.
