Geyser Land Hastings Pick

“The Press** Special Service HASTINGS. It has been a long time since a handicapper won a big race in the central districts as easily as Tolka managed the Hawke’s Bay Centennial Gold Cup at Hastings last week. But whether she would have won so easily had some of her rivals not been blocked in the straight, is a matter for conjecture. Geyser Land, a winner at Ellers-lie two starts ago, is a fit horse, as is Plush, whose connexions have indicated she probably will run in the Dewar Cup in preference to the Ormond Gold Cup. Dalvui, which was ridden by A. T. Jones last week, will be ridden by W. D. Skelton in the Dewar Cup and this could be a big factor in how he races. Tolka is engaged in the Dewar Gold Cup, also 11 furlongs, and is at peak fitness, according to her trainer, H. Mills, of Hawera. Tolka must be one of the

best fancied runners on Saturday although she will meet many of her rivals on worse weight terms. However, Geyserland and Plush both had shocking runs from the top of the straight in the Centennial Cup, and should test her. The field for the seven-fur-long Dewar Eleven Hundred, the second leg of the double, is particularly good. Starlit and Alkira dead-heated for fifth over six furlongs on the first day and both would be greatly suited by the extra furlong. Starlit is a class mare and her trackwork this week has been excellent. There is no doubt she is at peak and ready for a winning turn. She will have her last race at Ellerslie during the Royal meeting and afterwards will be mated with Alcimedes. The track is certain to be hard and fast.
