NEW ART SCHOOL

First Steps On Plans A new School of Fine Arts is being considered by the University of Canterbury, and next Tuesday its council will probably seek authority for the preparation of sketch plans. This action has become necessary, earlier than expected, because part of the proposed arts, commerce, music, law, and library complex (approved late last year) will be built over the site of “Okeover” homestead and the temporary studio block at present occupied by the School of Fine Arts at 11am. This school has laboured under difficulties for many years. Long ago' it outgrew the old School of Art block on the Rolleston avenueHereford street corner of the central university. This has been taken over by the university library pending the erection of a new library at Ham. “Okeover” and the studio block were made as comfortable as possible but have always been makeshift. Since the siting of thirdstage Ham buildings became known, preparation of space requirements for a new School of Fine Arts has been given urgency. The new school will probably be toward Clyde road, adjoining the planned School of Forestry and possible School of Architecture.
