TUNNEL AND BRIDGE
A.A. Views On Finance The Automobile Association (Canterbury) opposes in principle the suggestion that some part of the cost of construction and maintenance of the Auckland harbour bridge and Christchurch - Lyttelton road tunnel be a charge on National Roads Board’s funds. A resolution to this effect was passed by the executive of the association at ■ recent meeting, and was reported to its council meeting last evening. The executive agreed that the bridge was a part of the national network of New Zealand roads, and it did not seem unreasonable for certain costs to be borne by the fund.
The chairman (Mr T. W. Milliken) said the question of principle was whether projects launched at local level could later expect to be a national responsibility. The bridge had undoubtedly proved its value and by being initiated as a local project it had become possible sooner than the country could otherwise have provided it. Mr E. R. Casbolt said that both the bridge and road tunnel should ultimately be free of toll charges. He thought the association should agree to the proposals.
