Southlander’s Hard Victory In Singles

The 15-year-old Southland junior, Miss S. Collins, who was runner-up to Miss S. Field in the women’s singles, beat Miss R. Dillon, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. to win the under-17 girls’ singles championship in the Canterbury Easter tennis tournament yesterday.

Miss Dillon fought back well to stretch Miss Collins to three sets and at no time until the last two games was the match decided.

In a two hour marathon the top seeded pair in the men's doubles. R. McCutcheon and J. I Mitchell, were toppled by the. second seeds, D. Hawkes and l I. Craig, 3-6. 10-8, 10-8. The game stretched both pairs to their maximum and though McCutcheon and Mitchell started off well, the other two showed that they; were equal to the challenge. Neither pair. however., showed real supremacy and it i was probably the fact that Hawkes and Craig made fewer mistakes that gave them the match. Results were:— Men's Singles Final.—J.
