Irish Society Celebrations

The South Island feis of the Christchurch Irish National Society was opened in Christchurch on Saturday by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr H. P. Smith). Competitions were held on Saturday’ and a dance was held in the evening.

On Sunday a procession led by the Irish Society Pipe Band marched from the Irish Society hall to the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Barbadoes street where a commemorative Mass was held. In the afternoon sports, including an exhibition game of hurling, were held at the Papanui Domain. The hurling, between a Christchurch team and a Combined team, was won by Christchurch. 28-26. In the evening a historical pageant was presented by the Irish Drama Group. This Easter is the 50th anniversary of the rising of the Republican Army against British rule in Dublin.
