‘Not Helping To End Apartheid'

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, April 10. The Ambassador of Guinea, Mr Achkar Marof, has accused South Africa’s major trading partners—including Australia—of making no real effort to end South Africa’s policies of apartheid.

The Ambassador, chairman of the 11-member special committee on apartheid, made the statement in connexion with a letter from the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr Fanfani, of Italy, saying that he was unable to nominate six additional members to the committee, as requested by the last Assembly. No major power is at present a member of the committee, but the Assembly resolution was worded so that the six new members would be chosen from major powers

conducting substantial trade with South Africa. Attitude Disappointing Mr Marof said: “we invited them (the major powers) not in order to criticise them, but in order to seek their co-opera-tion for effective action. I am certainly disappointed at the attitude of these States, but not surprised at all. “Unless these powers change their attitudes, the United Nations will be powerless to deal with apartheid and the alternatives will be a violent conflict with wide repercussions,” he added.
