DEBATING CONTEST

Eight Teams Take Part

Eight teams from Christchurch and Timaru competed in the Easter conference and competitions of the Federated Catholic Clubs and Societies of New Zealand which were held in Christchurch at the week-end. The competitions were opened on Friday evening by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby). On Saturday there were novice and open prepared speeches, elocution and oratory competitions. On Sunday morning delegates attended the annual conference and in the afternoon and evening teams debated the question: “That private schools should be abolished in New Zealand.” Results are:—
