SAIL AWAY’S FAST MILE

Sail Away ran a fast mile in training on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. This, after a sound run with Bandon on the outside of the course proper on Saturday, makes it almost certain that the “iron horse” from Woodville will be thoroughly fitted for the £3600 George Adams Handicap at Riccarton today. Yesterday Sail Away, with W. H. Beck up, ran his mile on the plough in Imin 42 2-5

sec, the last half-mils in 51 sec, and the final three furlongs in 37 4-ssec. The gallop pleased Sail Away’s trainer, S. A. Brown. The Tsako gelding missed a gallop last Thursday because of travelling arrangements, and has been “eating his head off” in the meantime. Brown said yesterday that Sail Away was not noted for his deeds in solo gallops, which made yesterday’s trial all the more pleasing. Cassarook was scratched yesterday for the George Adams Handicap, leaving Red Siren to run for the powerful Winsloe stable in the Canter-

bury Jockey Club’s feature race. Palisade and Court Belle looked well when given striding work at Riccarton yesterday. Palisade was brought north on Saturday with Warfare, and R. J. Pledger gave him strong pace work on the sand yesterday. Court Belle was brought north on Friday, but did not gallop on Saturday. She should be one of the best-conditioned runners in the quality field for the George Adams Handicap. Most of Saturday’s training at Riccarton was done 30ft out on the course proper. Best gallops by candidates for major races today included:—
