Hot Meteor Crater
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 10. Three Wellington men are thought to have found the landing place of a meteorite in the Lower Wairarapa. Messrs A. Laurenson, R. Goile and R. Thurgood were on a shooting trip early on Friday morning when they noticed what they supposed to be a shooting star. “We thought no more of it until later that afternoon when we came across a smouldering area in the forest,” said Mr Laurenson tonight. “The hole was about five feet wide and about as deep. Another hole
branched away from it but had caved in and was full of ash and hot rocks. We went to pick up a couple of rotks, but they were red hot.”
Mr Laurenson said they tried to clear the hole to extinguish the fire beneath, but the deeper they dug the hotter it became.
“About four feet In every direction around the hole everything was burning. Bushes round about were covered in a white powder,” he said.
Although rocks within four feet of the whole were hot. rocks only one or two feet away were cold.
