BOWLS Three Teams Qualify For Post-Section Fours Play

Three teams—A J. Walker (Shirley), R. Ward (Shirley) and M. Lawson (Sydenham)—qualified for post-section play in the Easter fours bowling tournament when they won their first six matches by the end of the second day of the tournament. There are 15 rinks with five wins which need another win to qualify.

Bowlers had a kaleidoscope of weather to cope with on Saturday, and the change from sunshine in the morning to a blustery north-wester in the afternoon followed abruptly by a southerly change and rain did not make for consistent bowling. Walker had three quite hard matches on Saturday. He beat Miller (Linwood) 21-18 in the first .match, and was too consistent for Williams (St. Albans) to win 20-11, but in the sixth round he beat Cornelius (Hornby) only 1714. The other Shirley player, Ward, had three convincing wins and made sure of qualifying by beating Clark Amberley). 25-8, in the sixth round. M. Lawson had a close call in a tight match against Brough (Spreydon) before winning 16-15; and had only a two point margin over Bennett, and then in the sixth round, just scrambled home against Lowrie (Christchurch), 19-18. Among the teams needing another win are the experienced R.S.A. four, skipped by N. McNab, and C. Rowe (Opawa). McNab lost to Burtt (Fendalton) in the fourth round, but Rowe, who lost a game on Friday, played consistently to win his three matches on Saturday. Good Form K. G. Murray and W. R. Wilkinson continued with their good form to win their three matches on Saturday. R. Pirrie (Dallington), who had won his first five matches, lost the sixth round to Williams (St. Albans), 20-19. A Beckenham four, skipped by M. YugoviCh, lost decisively to Le Rod (Morrison Avenue) in the fourth round, and although it won its next two matches still has only four wins.

K. R. Smith (Christchurch) was in better form on Saturday, winning three games, and, like Yugovich, needs two wins today to qualify. The day’s play was notable for many close finishes. There were some large victories and in one game between Basher (Rangiora) and Sullivan (Woolston W.M.C.) there was an oddity when Sullivan failed to score one point. Generally, however, only a few points separated most teams.
