NEW YORK. Cardigan Bay probably will start as a 5/1 on favourite to win the 100,000dollar Yonkers International Pace on Thursday. Cardigan Bay, the 10-year-old gelding which has raced in the United States for the last two years, was impressive on Friday night in winning his first race at Yonkers Raceway this season. He paced the mile in 2min l.lsec, fastest time of the new season, in a non-betting trial for the international. He ran the last quarter in 28.8 sec after his trainer-owner. S. Dancer, held him in check in the early stages. "Cardigan Bay is better than ever. He has more life than ever,” Dancer said afterwards. “If he had been pressed, he could have broken two minutes easily.” Another New Zealand pacer. Orbiter, a seven-year-old gelding bought for 125,000 dollars in January, won his first race at Yonkers Raceway on Saturday night in a trial for the international. He was hard-pressed to beat Special Hanover by a nose in 2min 4sec. Although his performance was not impressive, his trainer-driver, D. Insko, said he was satisfied, adding that Orbiter had been coughing before the race and was no yet in top condition.
Another New Zealand horse. Gay Robin, also will contest the international. Two other New Zealand imports, Great Credit and Smokeover, have not been invited. The three American entries are Murdock Hanover, Adios Marches and Adora's Dream.
