Canterbury Relay Team Sets Athletics Record
“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN. A record-breaking win by the Canterbury University 4 x 440 yards relay team was a highlight of the New Zealand Universities Easter tournament athletic meeting at Dunedin on Saturday.
The team (J. Sargent, P. Marks, D. Stevenson and R. Tweedie) ran the excellent time of 3min 21sec, beating the old time of 3min 22.25ec set by Canterbury in 1964. B. Jones, of Canterbury, ran 13min 54.75ec in the three miles but the wind was very strong in the back straight and it made the race an uphill one against the clock. J. Beckett, of Auckland, ran an excellent 4min 6.4 sec in the mile. He followed the field until the last lap when he sprinted down the back from 300 yards and left his opponents behind. His time was a record, beating Jones’s 4min B.2sec set last year. In the 440 yards hurdles, D. Stevenson, of Canterbury, won the event in 54sec, only o.4sec off the record held by R. Johnson, of Otago. Miss P. Haworth, of Victoria, set a new record in the women’s
100 yards when she ran lO.Ssec to take the title. The old record set in 1963 was ll.Ssec. She -also broke the 220 yards record of 25.25ec, by running 25sec, but it was wind assisted and therefore will not be recognised. D. Mackenzie, of Canterbury, ran two 100 yards races by invitation. In the first race he recorded 9.7 sec and in the second O.Ssec, but both were wind assisted. In the men’s discus, P. Crawford. of Canterbury, missed the record by two inches. He threw 157 ft, just failing to reach the record distance of 157 ft 2in set in 1960. B Spiers, of Otago, high jumped 6ft 3Sin to break the Otago provincial record of 6ft 2in but missed the university record of 6ft sin set in 1956. The men’s shield was won by Otago with 80 points, from Canterbury 44. Victoria 26, Auckland 23. The women’s shield was won by Otago with 33 points from Auckland 30, Victoria 24, and Massey 3.
