SWEPT INTO KELP

No Sign Of Skin Diver (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 10. A skin diver is missing, believed drowned, after a wave swept him into thick kelp at Pipikaretu Beach on the Otago peninsula early this afternoon. The man, Walter Nesbit, aged 37, of 9 Ryan street, Portobello, entered the water at 2.05 p.m., and was washed away by a sudden surge. The force of the water washed his mask off.

A companion, Mr John Williamson from Invercargill, threw a rope but was also washed into the water. He was swept up a narrow rocky cleft but managed to scramble clear. Nesbit was not seen again. Several boats have searched the area without success and the Dunedin Underwater Club will attempt to find the body at low water tomorrow.

Nesbit and Williamson each had two children nearby at the time of the accident.
