Splendid Season For Haglund And United

'THE United Bays cricket team, and its opening batsman, Paul Haglund, provided a number of startling performances in the Banks Peninsula Sub-association’s competition this sear n. The team, which draws its players from Duvauchelles, Okains and Pigeon Bays, and Little Akaloa, won for the third successive season both the Kinloch and Lavericks Cups, it being the first time the latter had been won in three successive seasons. Playing 19 oneday matches throughout the season, the team won 14 and lost only three—twice to Kaituna and once to Le Bons.

Significantly, three of Haglund’s failures were aganst Kaituna. An opening batsman, he failed to reach 60 only five times in 16

innings. In tije full sub-asso-ciation competition, Haglund made 1287 runs at an average of 117, including eight centuries and a highest score of 156 not out. His fastest innings was against Akaroa in January when he reached three figures in less than an hour. Haglund, an attractive batsman who scores all round the wicket, formed a formidable opening partnership with D. Marshall. Marshall scored 730 runs during the season at an average of 46. The two invariably got the team off to a good start and in the course of the season their opening stands amassed 1184 runs. They had one stand of more than 200, four century partnerships and another three of more than 50. Haglund was also the only Banks Penisula representa-, five to be picked for North Canterbury and he made 230 runs in these games, to give him a total of 1517 for the season.

Another leading player was Haglund's twin brother, Peter. He made 318 runs and, with his in-swing bowl*

ing, took 30 wickets. The chief wicket-taker was the captain and former St. Albans medium-pacer, 1. H. Plummer, who had 68 wickets at little over 11 runs each.

The leading support came from R. Kay, a leg-spinner who took 49 wickets including nine for 63 in a single innings; and a fast-medium in-swinger, W. McLeod, who took 39 wickets for nine runs each.

The wicket-keeper, C. Blaikie, effected 19 dismissals in the season and the Haglund twins took 39 catches between them in the slips.

In a season of many notable performances, the most crushing win was against Akaroa in the second match of the season. United declared at 238 for no wickets in two hours, and dismissed Akaroa for 78 and 85: a victory by virtually an innings, 10 wickets and 75 runs.

Although teams in the sub-associations are often of a changeable nature, United used only the following 18 players during the season: Plummer (captain), Paul, Peter and H. Haglund, D., H. and G. Marshall, R. Kay, W. McLeod, R. Harris, J. Bennett, C. Blaikie, P. and T. Griffin, C. Stewart, J. Williams, I. Craw and G. Moore.
