SEARCH STOPS
Miner Not Found (N Z Press Association) GREYMOUTH, April 8. Hazardous conditions and the likelihood of a further break-through of more coal, shingle and mud have caused the search for a missing miner to be abandoned. The miner, James William Cooper, aged 61, was swept from his working place in the Boatman’s colliery of Messrs Norman Alburn and Son on Monday. An inspector of mines from Westport, Mr S. Kenney, who was in charge of rescue work, said on Thursday afternoon that workers were experiencing extremely difficult conditions.
He was emphatic there was no possible chance of Mr Cooper being found alive. Nobody could say whether the body would be recovered, said Mr Kenney. Mr Cooper was one of four men in the mine when water rushed in without warning as they were at the coal face before starting work on Monday morning.
