Check On Grubs

The Department of Agriculture is seeking to build up an overall picture of the grass grub control situation, in particularly Mid-Canterbury.

Mr F. C. Allen, of the research division of the Department of Agriculture, said yesterday that they were trying to collect grub samples from areas where there were complaints about control for despatch to the Entomology Division in Nelson for testing and they were also seeking to take samples from all over Ashburton County on a grid basis to make it possible to form a picture of the overall extent of the problem. In this work Mr Allen said he was working in collaboration with the Entomology Division and the farm advisory division of his own department.

There had been complaints about control from most parts of the province, he said, and in the past these had been put down to methods of application used and to timing of applications and it was likely that such factors would still be playing. some part in the position. It was hoped that the survey would also provide information on such factors.
