Prison On Peat
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 8. Storms, heavy rainfall and the discovery of extensive peat areas on the site of the new Paremoremo maximum security prison have delayed construction. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) said in a progress report on the prison today that the discovery of peat had necessitated redesigning the foundations. Heavy rain early this year caused flooding to ducts and foundations, and the excavations had caved in. But Mr Hanan said
Ministry of Works’ officers worked over the Christmas holidays to redesign the foundations, the excavations had been re-dug and the ducts reinstated.
The new prison, which Is to cost £2,057,560, was to have been completed by March, 1968. It Is not yet known if recent construction hold-ups will delay the project further.
Mr Hanan said steady progress was being made on the site. Construction in the first three and a half months of work had been satisfactory. “It is now possible to see a substantial beginning to this most important work,” he said.
