Students Seek Trial By Jury

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, April 8. Two young men facing charges concerning National Service Registration will seek trial by jury.

One of them, Wayne Roger Haylen, aged 21, a law student, of Dulwich Hill, said this yesterday. After a brief hearing before the Special Federal Court he said: “We would like to be tried by 12 of our fellow citizens. But we are not sure at this stage if trial by jury is possible.” Haylen and Robin Melrose, also aged 21, an arts student, of Burwood, have been charged under different sections of the National Service Act. Through their barrister, Mr Neville Wran, both won adjournments from Mr H. Berman, S.M., until May 20. The adjournments were opposed by Mr lan Sheppard, in-

structed by the Deputy Crown Solicitor, Mr Ray Neal. Haylen, vice-president of the Youth Campaign Against Conscription and son of the former Labour member of Parliament for Parkes. Mr L. Haylen, was charged with failing to produce his National Service Registration certificate. Melrose was charged with failing to notify the Department of Labour and National Service of the destruction of his registration card. Cheers from about 100 people demonstrating against the Federal Government’s conscription policy could be heard in Court. The public gallery, with accommodation for about 30, was packed.
