Australian Mail Dispute Ends
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, April 8. Australian mail services should return to normal next week after an agreement in Melbourne yesterday.
The Amalgamated Postal Workers’ Union has directed its members to resume normal work as soon as possible.. Overtime and work-to-regu-lations bans have disrupted deliveries of 17 million letters throughout Australia. On Monday week, the Public Service Arbitrator will conduct a statutory conference aimed at ending the dis-
pute over the PostmasterGeneral’s proposal to employ junior girls on new, automated letter-sorting machines. Mail sorters in New South Wales will work overtime shifts over the Easter weekend to clear the huge pile-up of about 10 million mail articles. G.P.O. officials conferred with trade unionists to arrange for a return to normal work immediately after the “truce” in Melbourne yesterday. The Assistant DirectorGeneral of Posts and Telegraphs of New South Wales said last night that nearly six million mail articles were banked up at the Sydney G.P.O.
