ROCKET FAILS

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 8. The United States moon-probe programme suffered a setback when the upper stage of an Atlas-Centaur rocket combination failed to perform in space last night

At first the launching was declared a success, but information from tracking stations later indicated that the engines of the liquid hydrbgenfuelled Centaur had not started up again after the rocket had spent 25 minutes coasting 100 miles up in a parking orbit The rocket combination, carrying a dummy surveyor satellite on a dress rehearsal for a later soft-landing moon mission, was sent aloft from Cape Kennedy. It was not known whether the eight-year battle with the difficult behaviour problems of liquid hydrogen under weightless conditions was involved or the rocket itself.
