Kitten Helped A small stray kitten was one of the unofficial collectors when the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held its annual street appeal on Thursday. Two dogs also “assisted” the collectors. The kitten and one of the dogs, a rescued stray, were offered homes during the day. More than 100 collectors, most of them schoolchildren, helped with the collection. By yesterday the amount collected slightly exceeded £9OO. The secretary of the Christchurch branch (Mr J. L. Paulden) said that he was very pleased indeed with the response. Much-Travelled A metal rocking-horse sign which indicates Rocking Horse road has been inclined to wander far afield in recent months. The “horse” disappeared earlier this week and turned up in Blenheim. Some time ago the sign disappeared, and was found several weeks later in Reefton. Long Coma A Porirua man injured in a car accident four years ago on April 4 has entered the fifth year of a deep coma. He is Mr C. Paki, who suffered severe head injuries when the car in which he was a passenger crashed on the highway between Foxton and Sanson. He did not regain consciousness, and has remained in a coma in the Palmerston North Hospital. Holiday Weather The weather in Christchurch on Thursday was warm and sunny and the maximum temperature recorded at Harewood was 69 degrees at 1 p.m. In the Botanical Gardens at the same time the temperature was 71 degrees. Yesterday was cloudy, and there was a light easterly wind. At Harewood at 6 a.m. the temperature was 52 degrees, by 9 a.m. it was 54 degrees, and at noon 62 degrees. The maximum temperature recorded at Harewood yesterday was 63 degrees about 1 p.m. At 3 p.m. the temperature had dropped to 61 degrees. The same temperature was recorded on the gauge on the Government Life building at 4.30 p.m. More Mowers • The rotary-type lawn-mower has become more popular than the cylinder motor mower or the hand mower. The Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker) says in the latest Abstract of Statistics that 58,764 rotary mowers were made in New Zealand last year, 18,807 more than in 1964. The production of cylinder motor mowers dropped from 10,903 to 9397 last year and the number of hand mowers fell from 8698 to 8119. New Zealand produced 76,280 mowers last year and 59,558 in 1964. Up To Date A portrait of King George V, which has been hanging outside the main office at the Levels County Council Chambers-, will be replaced by one of the reigning Monarch. It was suggested at a recent meeting of the council that, with the April meeting being the first of the new financial year, and in view of the discovery of Boer War rifles in the cellars of the Timaru City Council, the time was ripe to replace the portrait of King George V.—(F.0.0.R.) Blood Record The crew of the Taranaki has established a record for blood donations in Hong Kong. From 245 men on board the ship in Hong Kong for maintenance, 208 pints of blood were given in response to an appeal by the Red Cross Society.—(P_A )
