Yankee Dandee Pays £3l In Cup

Yankee Dandy, which broke early in his race on Saturday night and was pulled up, won the Grey* mouth Trotting Cup with pacemaking tactics on the second night of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s Easter meeting last night. Yankee Dandy, which is prepared for Mr R. M. Wilson, by F. E. Newfield, at Templeton, gave his trainer his second major driving success at the meeting. On Saturday night Newfield drove Our Smokey to victory in the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Last night Our Smokey, this time driven by O. M. Quinlan, was well beaten although he finished second. He was seven lengths from the winner but beat the others almost as easily. Vaggi, which, like Our Smokey, was close to the pace all the way, was three lengths away third. Allakasam, fairly weli back till late in the race, was the best of the others. Yankee Dandy, whose last win was gained at Invercargill in January. 1964, was one of the ong shots. He was the 10/12 favourite and paid £3l 10s and £9 6s for a win and a place and £212 Ils 6d for £1 with Thunderina. a firm favourite for the second leg. the Westland Handicap. Thunderina was a little slow off the mark but was soon up in mid-field on the inner. She worked off the fence in the last round and moved into a challenging position near the i straight entrance. In a battling finish with Plue Pin the favourite did best to win by a long head and give J. A. Carmichael h s third winning drive for the night. Blue Pin was never far away :n the running but Lofty, which finished third, and Angel Lass, the fourth place-getter, came from the back for their placings. Both had ruined their chances of winning by breaking at the start. All . Baba, the leader into the straight, headed the rest. The on-course double was won by Hal Air and High Caste. The combination paid £llO 18s for £l. The meeting was held in fine weather and the track was in good order. Results: BLENHEIM HANDICAP, £200;
