SHOWING FOR YEAR
‘‘The Sound Of Music” A telegram from Julie Andrews and Robert Wise was the highlight of the first birthday celebrations of “The Sound of Music,” held at the State Theatre yesterday. The telegram read: “To our first world-wide anniversary. We want to -express our thanks to you and your patrons for the attendance records which have made ‘The Sound of Music’ the most beloved picture of all time.” It was signed by Julie Andrews and Robert Wise. Guests at the birthday celebrations included the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and Mrs Manning, 52 senior citizens, and Miss Julie Andrews, aged 18, of Canterbury. Mr Manning said that it was an unusual celebration in Christchurch. The completion of the film’s first year was an expression of Christchurch’s appreciation of a good film. To set such a record was remarkable, and the management and projectionists were to be congratulated, said Mr Manning. Miss Andrews blew out a candle on the birthday cake to signify the completion of the first year, and the Mayor and Mayoress, Miss Andrews, and Mrs F. Copsey. representing the senior citizens, cut the cake.
