IMPORTING HORSES
Policy Being Reviewed (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) on Tuesday night said the whole policy regarding importation of horses would be re-examined. His statement was prompted by the application made by Mr A. D. Dynes, of Invercargill for a licence to import a yearling filly. Mr Shelton said discussions would be held with representatives of the stock breeding industry.
Referring to Mr Dynes's case, Mr Shelton said the general policy on importation of horses was to provide for stock for breeding purposes only.
“This policy applies to all importations whether on a remitting or non-remittance basis.” he said. Mr Shelton said that in making application for the licence to import the filly, Mr Dynes stated it would be raced in New Zealand before being used for breeding purposes. The Minister said that he would have thought an experienced breeder such as Mr Dynes would have realised the necessity for obtaining an import licence before committing himself to the purchase of a horse in Australia. “Further consideration has since been given to Mr Dynes's application and a licence has now been authorised.” the Minister said.
