ADDINGTON MARKET Calf Prices Well Over Last Year’s Rates

Values were very high when the first sizeable selection of calves this season came forward at Addington yesterday. Values appeared about £5 a head up on last season’s. The offering was not large, and all classes were in keen demand from a large gallery 7.

Steer calves sold to £34 18s 6d, and rarely dropped below £2O for even quite small calves. Heifer calves sold to £25 18s 6d, and did not fall below £l5 3s 6d. It was an excellent start to the calfselling season.

Older cattle still sold well, but looked relatively cheap compared with the calves. Breeding cows selling to almost £4O were again a strong point of the market. In spite of dwindling selection. two-tooth ewes and old ewes continued to meet a very strong sale in the store sheep market. Values for two-tooths were fully up to the higher rates of last sale, and good, soundmouthed Romney ewes with fair frames appreciated 3s to 4s a head. Wethers met a very buoyant market, values rising as much as 4s a head, the best pen

of two-tooths realising 81s 6d. The best of the store wether lambs held to last week’s rates, but the others weakened by 2s to 3s a head. Because of the Easter holidays, next week’s sales will be held on Wednesday and Thursday instead of Tuesday and Wednesday. The store sheep yarding totalled 10,096, compared with 13,428 last week, and was made up of 1191 ewe lambs (2630 last sale), 4205 wether lambs (3807), 820 two-tooth ewes (1516), 1912 adult ewes (4687), and 1968 wethers (788). The yarding of cattle totalled 757, compared with 733 last week. It included 598 calves (34 last week) and 159 older cattle (739). Store Lambs Apart from the best quality lambs, values In the store lamb section declined on last week.

Shorn lambs were again yarded in fairly large numbers, and although some of them were of good quality, there were a lot which were very ordinary. The market opened quietly, but after half a race, picked up. the best shorn lambs being firm on last week, with the other poorly-grown sorts 2s to 3s easier.

The ewe lambs were generally of average quality, with the best selling up to recent rates. The best of the shorn Romney wether lambs sold from 60s fid to 645, with medium to good from 54s to 58s, and small down to 465. Romneys, in the wool, sold to 65s 6d. Best halfbred wether lambs, in the wool, sold to 60s 6d, with average to good from 53s to 575. Romney ewe lambs, in the wool, sold to 70s 6d. while the majority of the shorn Romney ewe lambs sold from 60s 6d to 68s 6d. Halfbred or Corriedale ewe lambs in the wool sold from 68s to 73s 6d for the best, with the best shorn selling to 635. The best shorn Down cross lambs sold to 495, with medium from 43s fid to 475. Woolly lambs sold to 565.

Two-tooth Ewes With the exception of four pens, all the two-tooths were from the Chatham Islands, and they met a strong sale. Although the buying gallery was not large, all pens met a consistent inquiry, with values fully on a par with last week's higher rates. From the outset it was apparent that there are still many fanners in search of two-tooths, resulting in a rise of about 4s a head over the last two weeks. The best of the two-tooths—-all of them from the Chathams —sold from £5 5s to £5 10s, with medium Romneys from 92s to 995, and others down to 755. Only three pens of Corrtedale two-tooths were yarded, and these sold at 90s. 92s 6d, and £5 0s 6d respectively. Leading sales of two-tooths were: — D. L. Preece (Chatham Islands), 59 Romneys at 89s: Narbey and Company (Long Bay), 100 Romneys at 965. Adult Ewes The adult ewe section was the smallest of the autumn, but buying power was very strong, and values appeared to move up yet again on recent high rates. The good-quaiity sound-mouthed Romney type of ewe was 3s to 4s ahead of recent rates. Top price this week was 74s 6d for a pen of early-shorn Romneys from Akaroa. while big-framed one-year ewes sold from 60s to 645. Old ewes with very poor mouths sold from 42s to 55s 6d. Very few halfbred or Corriedale ewes were yarded, and top price was 74s 6d for 73 four-year-old Corriedales from Ward. A pen of Border LeicesterMerino ewes from Hanmer sold at 725. Leading sales, quoted by stock firms, were: Estate T. Solomon (Chatham Islands). 77 five-year-old Romneys at 70s fid: H. W. Lanauze (Chatham Islands), 81 mixedaged Romneys at 755: A. G. Wethers More than a third of the adult sheep yarding consisted of wethers and thej’ met a strong demand. Two-tooths showed a rise of about 4s a head on last week’s rates. As with other sections of the two-tooth and adult sheep market, most of them came from the Chathams. With one exception, all the Chathams two-tooths sold from 77s to 81s 6d —prices which were markedly better than values prevailing in the fat sheep pens yesterday. The wether entry included a draft of almost 500 two-tooth halfbreds from the Poplars Station, Lewis Pass, and these met an excellent sale, prices ranging from 76s to 79s 6d. Values for older wethers were consistently firm on recent rates, three-shear Romneys from the Chathams selling to 67s 6d, and older wethers down to 555. Sales of wethers, quoted by stock firms, were: T and J. Barrett (the Poplars Lewis Pass), 436 two-toolh halfbreds at 76s to 79s 6d; H. Thomas (Chatham Islands), 92 two-tooth Romneys at 81s 6d: G. Prenderville (Chatham Islands), 186 twotooth Romneys at 77s to 81s.

Calf Sale The future of the store cattle sale was the first sizeable entry of calves of the season and these met a very buoyant sale with values in accord with most optimistic expectations. Compared with last year there would be a good £4 or £5 a head improvement, and in cases the advance was even greater. The calf yarding at 598 head. Including 381 steer calves and 217 heifer calves, compared with only 34 head last week. It was not a large selection for this time of the year and included calves of a fairly wide range of size with some lines of extremely well grown forward cattle to a sprinkling of quite small calves. The sale opened before a large gallery and for calves of all sizes and breeds there was a uniformly buoyant sale. Steer calves sold at better than £3O on six occasions and the top price was £34 18s 6d for 13 Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus Hereford cross steer calves from Okuku Farm, Ltd, (Okuku). Hardly any steer calves sold under the £2O mark and average to good sorts of calves were selling around the £24 to £27 mark. Some of the smaller calves looked extremely well sold but as stated before there was an almost equally good market for every class. For the top bracket of calves, however, it was noted that there was a fairly restricted group of buyers. There was some feeling that some of the heifer calves may have been a little harder selling and perhaps not quite so buoyant but the over-all Im pression was that they also fully shared in the general advance in values and were selling at particularly good levels. Ten out of 17 pens bettered the £2O mark and they sold up to £25 18s 6d for Herofords from the estate of Mrs W. Macfarlane (Hawarden). The bulk of the heifer calves sold from about £l9 to £23.

Older Cattle After the "buoyant sale for calves, older cattle, apart front cows, looked fairly reasonable selling, but the sale for these cattle was still considered to be a very good one. The entry of older cattle was a small one at only 159 head compared with 739 last week. There was a continued strong market for breeding cows and two pens of black cows which had been mated with Aberdeen Angus bulls were very well sold at prices ranging from £33 18s fid to £39 18s 6d. Twoand-half-yearold steers sold to £44 Ss 6d for a pen of Herefords and Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus Hereford cross.
