Ashburton Puts Up Stakes
The Ashburton Trotting Club has increased stakes by £BOO to £10,750 for the two days of its winter meeting on June 4 and 6.
The biggest increase has been made in the stake for the Queen’s Birthday Stakes run on the second day of the meeting.
This race for three-year-old pacers which have won at least one race will now carry a stake of £lOOO, including a trophy valued at £3O. Last year the stake was £BOO, including a trophy valued at £75.
The big increase in this stake should encourage owne~s and trainers of well-per-formed three-year-olds to start.
With the exception of the races for maiden pacers which will carry stakes of £250, and the 2.16 class races fcr pacers, which will carry stakes of £BOO, all other races on the programme have had their stakes lifted. In the case of maiden trotters the increase is by £25 to £3OO, while all other events have had £5O added to their stakes.
The stakes at this meeting are now well up to metropolitan standards and far in advance of those paid by most clubs racing outside the four main centres. The Ashburton club has now increased stakes at all of its four meetings this season.
