VETERINARY STUDENTS

Unduly Low Pass Rate “The Press** Special Service WELLINGTON, April 4. Concerned at what it considers an unduly low veterinary pass rate, the University Grants Committee has asked the veterinary science faculty of the Massey University of Manawatu to check and explain the situation. The grants committee chairman (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) said that of the original intake of 32 students two years ago, 21 had been successful and reached the third year. Others had failed at some stage and were repeating parts of the course. Of the original 32 and an intake of 27 the following year only four had quit the course completely. “We were a little concerned.” said Dr. Llewellyn, “and have asked them to investigate. “The veterinary students are a selected group. They seem to have been less successful than selected students in other faculties, even in medicine.” The faculty had admitted difficulties, said Dr. Llewellyn. It was expanding, introducing new courses, working in temporary buildings and striving to establish scientific relationships with the veterinary community.
