Tornadoes In Florida Kill 9

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) TAMPA (Florida), Aprils. A string of tornadoes whirled across central Florida yesterday killing nine people, injuring 300 and leaving hundreds homeless.

The damage to property will amount to millions of dollars. Officials said that the death toll—six in Lakeland and three in Tampa—may rise. National guardsmen and state troopers worked throughout the night digging for additional victims. Others stood guard to prevent looting. Governor Haydon Burns said he was asking President Johnson to declare five counties disaster areas.

The tornadoes struck behind a line of howling squalls as school classes were beginning. Many of the victims were children. A bus carrying children to school at Tampa was sent flying end over end. Eighteen children were injured when a tornado rammed a junior high school at Lakeland.

In sections of the citrus belt, where tornadoes touched down, entire groves were destroyed, leaving the ground yellow with fruit
