Import Schedule
Sir, —Smarting under an import licence cut of 25 per cent for the 1966-67 year in the particular industry in which my company is engaged, I am in full sympathy with the members of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association who are reported this morning as being “flabbergasted” over the import schedule just issued. The district officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce has just spoken to the association and has asked members to “make do with existing plant" and “wait until a subsequent licensing period before seeking new equipment.” This advice makes peculiar reading when one learns that the Railways Department has just placed a contract for the supply from Japan of 17 diesel shunting locomotives “to replace a number of steam shunting locomotives.” Could not the Railways Department have “made do?”—Yours, etc., STEELIE. April 5, 1966.
