Magistrate’s Court Reckless Driving Admitted By Motor-Cyclist

Fines totalling £3B, with cancellation of his driver's licence for three years, were imposed on Allan Kenneth Tate, aged 19, a driver, when he appeared before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on three charges. On a charge of reckless driving Tate was fined £25 and disqualified for three : [years; for failing to stop for! a traffic officer he was fined £10; and for not having a licence to ride a motor-cycle he was fined £3. He pleaded I guilty. At 7.25 p.m. on March 20 a traffic officer in a patrol car saw Tate riding in Cashel street near England street, said Traffic Sergeant J. McMorran. The lights on Tate’s motor-cycle were not on, so the traffic officer turned and drew alongside Tate. Tate slowed, then increased speed rapidly to more than 60 miles an hour. He slowed to 45 miles an hour, turned into Fitgerald avenue and then down Hereford street, where he travelled at speeds up to 60 miles an hour. He crossed Barbadoes street at 50 miles an hour, turned into Manchester street and crossed Kilmore and Peterborough streets at more than 50 miles an hour.

Tate was eventually approached at his home near the corner of Durham and Salisbury streets. He was not wearing a safety helmet and there were no lights operating on his motor-cycle during the whole of the chase. He said he had not stopped because he did not want to pay a fine.
