FAT LAMB COMPETITION

Oxford Pen Wins

Although some lambs were considered to be “a little bit prime,” only one was judged overfat, when entries in a fat lamb competition conducted by the Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Association were judged on the hooks yesterday. The lambs were judged on the hoof at the Oxford Show on Saturday, and at the works of the North Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Freezing Company yesterday. First award went to an entry from Mr C. R. Watson, of Caldbeck, Oxford, and the winning pen in the unrestricted class came from Mrs R. R. Horn, of Horrelville. By Southdown rams from Romney ewes, Mr Watson’s three lambs weighed 301 b, 311 b and 321 b. Mrs Hom’s lambs weighed 361 b, 391 b, and 361 b respectively. The judge (Mr N. E. Bell) told exhibitors that the competition, all round, was good. In some pens, only one lamb was putting the entry out, but overall, judging was close. He demonstrated the points of the winning carcases, saying they carried very little waste, and were nicely covered over the loin.

For Mr Watson, who initiated the competition four years ago, it was his second successive win, as he showed the winning lambs in the unrestricted class last year. His lambs were drafted by Mr D. H. Douglas, and Mrs Horn’s lambs by Mr B. Henderson. The winning lambs were not placed in the on-the-hoof judging.
