Friesian Heifers Bring Up To 450gns At Sales

Heifers realised up t> 450gns at a series of sales of Friesian cattle held recently in Canterbury. A grade cow sold for £lO5, thought to be a South Island record price. At the second night sale of Friesians, held at Addington Showgrounds by the New Zealand Fanners’ Co-opera-tive Association, in association with the Farmers’ Stud Stock Company, 18 female cattle, ranging from 15 months to two years and a half, sold for prices ranging from 80gns to 200gns and averaged 116gns. According to the official statistics for the sale, 15 incalf heifers averaged 119gns and two cows 90gns. A two-year-and-a-half from N.N. Mason (Okains Bay) was sold to S. W. Wolley (Tuamarina, Blenheim) for 200gns. An entry from E. J. Stalker and Son (Greenpark) brought 160gns and went to M. V. Dickie (Ferndale, Gore). Six bulls sold from 50gns to 135gns and averaged 91gns, the top price going to E. J. Stalker and Son. Nine heifers from the Pitcairns stud of E. L. Adams (Brookside) averaged almost 221gns. They ranged from lOOgns to 450gns. The toppriced heifer, Pitcairns P.I. Evelyn, was bought by Meikle Farm Trust (Hastings), which also paid 350gns for Pitcairns P.T. Ilq. Two bulls, also offered on account of Mr Adams, sold for 180gns and 290gns to Otago and Southland respectively. Eight heifers from the Welburn stud of E. C. Sunckell and Son varied from 70 to 105gns and averaged slightly better than 84gns. A bull also old for 160gns.

They included a six-year-old sold to T. H. and B. M. Jones (Springston) for £lO5. Four grade heifer calves ranged from £lO to £3O each. The sales of the Welburn, Pitcairns and Mairaki Friesians were held by the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association of Canterbury, Ltd., in conjunction with the Farmers’ Stud Stock Company Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd.
