C.W.I. Building Fund Growing
More than £232 was raised last year for the Canterbury Federation of Country Women’s Institutes building project, and the fund is growing steadily, according to the federation’s annual report. A total of £42 was raised by institutes for a Templeton Hospital chapel pew. Institute demonstrators have visited Sunnyside Hospital weekly to teach patients handcrafts and bonnets and singlets have been given to St. Helen’s Hospital, for premature babies.
Mrs M. J. Naughton, the federation’s representative on the Canterbury Farm Training Council, reported a greater demand by farmers for cadets and more applications for training. A wage scale had been drawn up, and Federated Farmers and Lincoln College had been approached to obtain a bursary for a cadet.
During the year Mrs R. W. McKechnie was elected to the executive committee of the Save the Children Fund’s North Canterbury branch. Templeton Hospital needed voluntary workers, Mrs E. Holmes, representative on the welfare council, reported. Institutes continued to assist patients through sponsorships.
