BIG ACREAGE PREDICTED
Autumn-Sown Wheat
Christchurch grain and seed merchants predict that autumn sowings of wheat will be even greater than they were last year.
The main sowings are made in April and in May and June, but quite large quantities of seed wheat have already been sent to growers.
Because of its poor milling quality, there will be a decline in Arawa. One merchant said this week that Arawa seed was being used for greenfeed purposes, but there would be nowhere near the usual acreage of Arawa next harvest, Harvesting of potatoes has begun, but the main crops will not be dug until later this month and next month. There has been some evidence of blight, but it should not greatly affect crops. The yield of table potatoes has declined in crops struck by frost last December. The main districts affected were Sheffield and Annat.
