Toastmasters’ Club Meets
More than 30 members attended the fifth meeting of the Christchurch Toastmasters’ Club which took the form of a women’s night and dinner. The Rev. M. Durning was the guest speaker, and several members made impromptu twominute speeches. All speeches were evaluated, and trophies were presented. Toastmasters’ clubs are organised groups of men who aim to increase their selfconfidence through their speaking ability. The organisation was founded in Santa Anna, California, by Dr. R. C. Smedley. It was incorporated in 1932 as a non-profit organisation. The movement has grown until now there are clubs chartered in every state of the United States and in 49 other countries. There are more than a million members now in toastmasters’ clubs throughout the world. Officers elected were: ser-geant-at-anns, Mr J. Heiman; secretary, Mr J. Williams; educational vice-president, Mr J. McNamara; administrative vice-president, Mr G. Thomas; president, Mr F. Menzies.
About 50 student dubs in the University of Canterbury received a total of £l7OB in grants from the Students’ Association last year. Sports dubs received £1165, other dubs £446, and special grants of £97 were made to a few others.
