Abortion Not Thought Wrong
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 30. A substantial proportion of the population did not regard abortion as wrong, the Secretary of Justice (Dr. J. L. Robson) said in Wellington last evening.
Dr. Robson was speaking to the National Council of Women on some of New Zealand’s laws relating to women and sex.
“I do not think there is any doubt that a substantial proportion of the population do not regard abortion as wrong,” he said.
Dr. Robson said abortion was a problem exercising people’s minds at present and it was being considered whether there should be an easing of the laws concerning abortion. Dr. Robson said the maximum penalty for procuring or attempting to procure an abortion by drug or instrument was 14 years’ imprisonment.
He said opinions differed greatly. The Roman Catholic Church opposed any liberalisation of Hie present law
but a committee of the Church of England had recently supported some changes. It was estimated that some thousands of abortions were performed annually, he said.
“These abortions are mostly performed by unskilled people in unhygienic conditions,” said Dr. Robson,
