FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A low-pressure trough is moving eastward over New Zealand. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Moderate variable winds; frequent showers in the mountains, with scattered thunderstorms elsewhere; variable skies, with only isolated showers; mild. Outlook: west to southwest winds and isolated showers.

Marlborough and Nelson.—Fresh west to north-west winds; frequent showers in the ranges west of Nelson, with a few scattered thunderstorms; variable skies elsewhere, with showers and considerable fair periods; mild temperatures. Outlook: westerlies, with isolated showers. Buller and Westland.—Winds moderate and variable; changeable with showery periods, and scattered thunderstorms; cooler. Outlook; unsettled.
