BIRTHDAY CUP

Galilee By Half-length

(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) ADELAIDE. The New Zealandbred gelding Galilee brilliantly won the £2600 Adelaide Birthday Cup, nine furlongs and 175 yards, at Victoria Park on Saturday. The Adelaide trainer, J. B. Cummings, who also won the Golden Slipper Stakes at Rosehill with Storm Queen, received his trophy from the Queen Mother, who watched the race. Galilee, a three-year-old by Alcimedes out of Galston, is now likely to start a hot favourite in the South Australian St. Leger at Morphetville on May 7. He won the City of Adelaide Handicap last week and Saturday’s Birthday Cup win made him only the third horse to complete the double. Galilee (18/10 favourite) won by half a length from Busline (10/1) with Shady Street (5/1) a neck away third. His time of 2min I.Bsec was only a tenth of a second outside the course record, set byj the New Zealand-foaled L’Escargot. New Zealand-bred horses completed a double when the Faux Tirage nine year old, Woambra, won the Marryatville Mile with topweight of 9st 41b. Woambra (16/10 favourite) scored by two and a half lengths from Contempler (22/10) with La Mariese (9/2) half a head away third.
